Amidst the buzz of the Sofar Fringe, D’Stassi Art - a beloved East London gallery - was transformed into an unlikely music venue. Throughout the day, the venue showcased a range of up-and-coming artists, each bringing something unique to the space. Among them was Cardiff-based musician Elina Lee, who delivered a standout set at D’Stassi Art. Backed by vivid art pieces, her dreamlike R&B sound transfixed listeners and made for one of the most atmospheric sets of the day.

During her set, Elina Lee meandered through a range of originals and covers. Her cover of Becky and The Birds’ ‘I Made My Baby Cry’ was a highlight, with Lee paying homage to her Swedish upbringing by integrating a self-written Swedish verse into the track.

Another highlight was ‘Deja Vu’, an original song that was released back in 2022. ‘Deja Vu’ is retrospective and contemplative, the song exploring the nostalgia and reflection that stems from a broken relationship. This song is filled with emotive lyrics and dreamy synths that create a sound reminiscent of The Marías.

Throughout her performance, the audience’s focus on Lee didn’t falter for a second; the art gallery a sea of keen listeners captivated by the ethereal sounds of Lee and her band. Comprised of drummer Furai Kuudzadombo, keyboardist Frazer McIntosh, and guitarist Jac Kelshaw, the band perfectly complemented her powerful vocals, taking her soulful dream-pop sound to new heights.

Once the set had come to an end, the gallery crowd burst into eager applause, the stunning music and creative setting creating a palpable feeling of inspiration that filled the entire room. Her set showed that the R&B-pop scene is continuing to thrive and evolve, with Elina Lee joining the ever-growing list of exciting up-and-coming artists that Sofar Sounds has played host to.
